During the course of 2022, 61 businesses and a total of roughly 2,900 workers in the UK participated in a pilot programme aimed at assessing the pros and cons of a 4-day working week. So, how did they get on?

The research results

The pilot ran for six months, from June to December 2022. In a recently published summary of the results of the pilot, it was reported that among the businesses who participated:

  • Staff retention improved significantly;
  • Absenteeism decreased;
  • 43% of employees felt an improvement in their mental health; and
  • Average business revenues actually rose by 1.4%.

Against the backdrop of these results, the report claims that 92% of the businesses who participated in the pilot plan to continue with a 4-day working week.

So, could this be the way forward? How would you and your business like to operate on a shorter working week?
